Prickly heat, also known as Heat rash or miliaria rubra, is a common skin condition that occurs when sweat glands become blocked and sweat collects under the skin. This results in small, red, itchy bumps that can be very uncomfortable and bothersome. Prickly heat can affect anyone, but it is more prevalent in babies and children due to their underdeveloped sweat glands. It typically appears in areas with friction or tight clothing, such as the neck, chest, back, armpits, groin, and thighs.
Fortunately, there are natural Ayurvedic remedies available that can help alleviate prickly heat and prevent its return. Ayurveda is an ancient medicinal system that utilizes herbs, diet, and lifestyle adjustments to harmonise the body and mind. According to Ayurveda, prickly heat is caused by an imbalance of pitta dosha, which is the principle of heat and transformation in the body. Pitta dosha can be exacerbated by hot weather, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and other factors.

Below are a few Ayurvedic remedies for prickly heat that are natural and can be attempted at home:
Neem Paste:
Neem leaf paste is a potent remedy for skin issues, with its healing properties combating inflammation, itching, and bacteria that can lead to prickly heat. To create this paste, simply grind fresh neem leaves with a bit of water until a smooth consistency is formed. Apply the paste to affected areas, leaving it on for 10 minutes before rinsing off with cold water. For best results, repeat this process once or twice daily until the rash subsides.
Aloe vera and cucumber gel:
Aloe vera and cucumber have cooling and soothing properties that can reduce skin redness, swelling, and itching. To make the gel, blend fresh aloe vera pulp and cucumber slices together, apply it on the affected areas for 20 minutes, and then rinse off with cool water. Repeat twice a day until the rash heals.
Sandalwood and rose water paste:
Sandalwood and rose water have calming and antiseptic qualities that can prevent infection and bad odor on the skin. To make the paste, mix sandalwood powder with rose water to form a thick paste, apply it on the affected areas, let it dry naturally, and then rinse off with cool water. Repeat once or twice a day until the rash subsides.
Sandalwood and Turmeric:
Combine powdered sandalwood and turmeric in equal proportions, add a small amount of cool water, and then apply the resulting paste to the sunburn, as advised by Vasant Lad, the Ayurvedic Institute’s founder.
Try Black Tea:
To treat sunburn, use cold, strong black tea on the affected area multiple times a day by applying it directly with cotton pads that have been soaked, according to Monica Bharadwaj, the author of Beauty Secrets from India.
Coconut Oil:
For a soothing and revitalizing effect, massage your skin with coconut oil, both of which are traditional Ayurvedic remedies known for their cooling properties.
Watermelon:
You can soothe and help heal heat rash by rubbing the fleshy part of the watermelon rind on the affected skin.
Here are some natural Ayurvedic remedies that can help alleviate prickly heat effectively. Avoid scratching or rubbing the rash, as it can worsen the condition and lead to infection. To prevent prickly heat, follow these preventive measures:
- Stay cool and dry: Avoid direct sunlight and hot weather, wear loose-fitting, breathable clothing, and use talcum powder to absorb sweat.
- Take cool showers: Wash away sweat and dirt to prevent clogging of sweat glands, and consider adding baking soda or oatmeal to your bath water.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and herbal teas like mint, chamomile, or fennel to regulate body temperature and flush out toxins.
- Avoid spicy, oily, or sour foods that can aggravate pitta dosha and eat cooling foods like cucumber, melon, yoghurt, and coconut water.
- Avoid direct sunlight and use sunscreen or an umbrella when going out.
By following these tips and using natural Ayurvedic remedies, you can effectively manage prickly heat and enjoy a comfortable summer.
